Much of it is also, lyrically speaking, firmly entrenched in the current events and politics of 1982 which badly dated the album even shortly after it came out. But overall, the theme is unrelentingly downer, preachy and overearnest. At least that’s what I have gathered from hanging around this place the last 3 years. Some do it because they don’t like the sound, some do it because they don’t like Roger. I have no idea what songs were meant for The Wall originally, but one could hazard a guess that Southampton Docks and Two Suns in the sunset could have been used.Įdit: As for why people hate The final cut? A lot of people don’t, a lot of people do. The Final Cut and Pros and Cons actually share one note progression in Fletcher Memorial and Go Fishin’ (In my opinion the two strongest cuts from their respective albums)
You are correct that The Final Cut is largely about the falklands conflict, I always assumed that Roger wrote more appropriate lyrics where needed for The Final Cut, but a lot of the melodies are songs that didn’t make it on to the Wall. He would go on to make the other one as a solo project.ĭavid and their manager at the time thought Pros and Cons was the better one musically speaking while Nick and Rick voted for the Wall. He presented both projects to the band and asked the band to choose. Roger wrote the outline for both The Wall and Pros and Cons after they release Animals. Pink Floyd at its worst (least?) is still in a league of it's own. This album just doesn't go anywhere.Īll that said, I'm still grateful for the Final Cut, the same way I am for Amused to Death, About Face, and rest of the solo and team efforts these guys put out. My favorite part about a pink floyd album is that I know I'm in for a journey I get picked up in one place, dropped off in another. Even Amused to Death offers more originality, and a better sense of adventure. Yes it has a few decent tracks, but it comes across like a b-sides compilation tied together with forgettable Roger ballads. The Final Cut is PF without Rick, and it shows, just like the Division Bell and Momentary Lapse are PF without Roger, and that shows too.Īnd it breaks so little new ground musically.
Rick's absence demonstrates just how valuable he was to the overall quality and depth of what they created. He created so much of the sonic landscape that make the other albums what they are, the interplay he had with David Gilmour was amazing.
